WMSoc Training Courses - Evaporative Cooling Water Chemistry Foundation - W255

Details

City & Guilds accredited

ONE-DAY COURSE:  9.15am – 5pm

Lunch and refreshments provided

Printed delegate materials provided

WHO FOR:

This course is designed for personnel who are just starting out in their cooling tower monitoring career or those who require a back to basics refresher course. It takes you up to the level where weekly testing on cooling towers is being undertaken. It does not cover the monthly testing requirements or designing a water treatment programme, which is covered in W256, Evaporative Cooling Water Chemistry Advanced course. Exposure to cooling towers and the treatment and testing regimes would be advantageous and greatly enhance your understanding of the discussions on the day.

PRE-COURSE PREPARATION:

Delegates with no chemistry background, to secondary school level or above, or those that need a refresher should complete W252 Water Treatment Chemistry Foundation before attending this course. If this course has not been attended, a suitable experience level and understanding of some of the basics behind water chemistry will be required.

OBJECTIVES:

This course is designed to:

  • Provide a background into water chemistry and how it is used in evaporative cooling processes
  • Look at the mechanical operation of cooling towers and what problems can occur with the impurities in water. We will outline the water treatment techniques we can implement to minimise these concerns
  • Provide a basic understanding of why we use cooling towers and how cooling towers operate
  • Indetify what tests need to be carried out on a weekly basis and how to interpret the results obtained

Further understanding with respect to calculations and programming can be obtained from the Evaporative Cooling Water Chemistry Advanced course, W256.

TOPICS COVERED:

Introduction to the following:

  • Basic chemistry of cater
  • Evaporative cooling process
  • Cooling towers v’s the alternatives
  • How does a cooling tower work
  • Types of cooling towers and evaporative condensers
  • Component parts of a cooling tower
  • Water chemistry within a cooling tower
  • Water treatment issues and control mechanisms within a cooling tower
  • Water treatment weekly testing and interpretation of results
  • The legal aspects

ASSESSMENT:

60 minute written exam with 70% pass mark. A resit is possible for anyone failing the exam for an additional fee within 3 months of the original course.

6 CPD points awarded.

Electronic certificates will be sent directly to successful candidates to the email address we hold on file.
